Hero Logger is a simple program that pulls log information from the game City of Heroes and analyzes it.  You can get detailed reports on what is happening in your game, like how much experience per hour your are earning, how much damage you are inflicting or taking, etc.

Click here to download:  Hero_Logger_Setup.exe  (1.2 MB)

Click the link above and choose "Save As".  Save the file to your Desktop or to a folder you can easily locate.  Note that the file is an "exe" file, not a "zip" file.  When the download is finished, you can run the install executable.  See Installation notes below.  If you have problems downloading, try turning off any download accelerator utilities.

Installation

Hero Logger requires a Windows compatible operating system (ME, NT, XP), and works with the game City of Heroes.

To install Hero Logger, just run the setup executable.  After installing, you can run City of Heroes and log in and start using the program right away.

Install will automatically run the License Wizard and Bind Setup Wizard.  For the license wizard, If you do not have an activation key, you can purchase the product and get a key emailed to you.  Otherwise select Trial Version.

The Bind Setup Wizard configures City of Heroes so that Hero Logger can get the log information it needs.  The bind commands append an extra command to your Tab, Space, and 1-3 keys.  I choose those keys because they are my main attack keys, and I press them often enough so that Hero Logger will get updates as needed.  If you you use other keys more often, you can bind them also, just follow the format used by the wizard.

When the wizards are complete, select Run Hero Logger, then ALT-TAB back over to City of Heroes.  You should see 2 small floating windows at the top of your screen.  These windows will update as you gain experience fighting villains.

Getting Started

Now that Hero Logger is getting clipboard updates, you can attack some villains to gain experience and influence.  After you gain some experience, hit space bar and confirm that the data was copied to the clipboard.  You can then ALT-TAB to Hero Logger and see that the stats have been updated (view the Stats tab).

You should also see the XP floating window get updated.  The XP per Hour window also gets updated, but must receive data for at least a minute before it can report any information (its blank until it has enough data).

Advanced

You can also track your own custom statistics by using the Create Statistic menu command.  The easiest way to do this is to click on a line your log file that you want to track, right click, and select "Create Statistic from log file".  A dialog will appear with all of the options you can use to track.  For example, you can track a total for a session, or just track a total for a time period (e.g, over last 10 minutes).  Select the normalize box to scale any time oriented stats to an hourly rate.

The main option in this dialog is the Line Type.  This determines what data is analyzed by the stat.  Each line type has different information associated with it, in terms of Key and Value.  Look at the log list to see which information is available.

After you have created a stat, you can right click and select "View Stat in Float Window".  You now have a new float window (you can position wherever you want), that you will be able to see while playing your game.

The best way to learn how to use the stats is to play around and try different things with it.

Tips

• You must add some bind commands so that City of Heroes copies its text to the clipboard.
• You can right click on the floating stat windows to bring up a popup menu.
• Run Hero Logger before starting City of Heroes.
• You can sort the log list by clicking on the column headings.
• Sort your Log list by Type to see which log lines are not being parsed.
• The Log list and Stats list have popup menus (use the right mouse button).
• You can create new stats based on any type of log line.
• Stats that have a "Time Length" only calculate the value based on data that is that recent.
• If you create a Stat and leave the Key Filter blank, that stat will include all lines regardless of the Key value.
• To view a stat in a floating window, select the stat, and then then the menu item "View Stat in Float Window".
• If you have trouble hearing the speech from Hero Logger, turn down the game volume and turn up your speakers.  The speech should sound louder.
